Norwegian negotiates to create an operative base.

Norwegian is in talks with Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi Commercial Aircraft for the rental of 40 regional SSJ100 aircraft, according to specialized Airlinewatch, to establish a base in Siberia. The Norwegian low-cost airline, notes the same information, has already signed a memorandum of understanding in exchange for the rights to use the trans-Siberian routes.

Norwegian has been trying to obtain permission from the Russian authorities for quite some time to launch direct flights through Siberia between Europe and Asia. The airline would take advantage of the situation of Sukhoi since the SSJ100 only has clients that are not Russian or from countries of the former Soviet Union.

Previously, the only foreign operators of the plane, the Mexican Interjet and the Irish CityJet, withdrew the plane from their fleets due to repeated engine failures and lack of spare parts. So far this year, Sukhoi Commercial Aircraft has sold only one SSJ100 jet.

According to the Russian television channel RBC, Sukhoi commercial aircraft will initially deliver ten SSJ100 Superjets to Norwegian Air Argentina, the South American subsidiary of the Norwegian airline. Subsequently, another 30 aircraft would be delivered to the parent company waiting for Norwegian to be entitled to use the trans-Siberian corridor.

The airline has been in talks with Russian authorities for several years to use the routes over Siberia for direct flights between its bases in Europe and destinations such as China, Japan and South Korea.
